A BADGE IN BIG ROCK
Amy McCray is on a mission to clear her half-brother of a murder charge. He’d been with a married woman at the time, and to protect her reputation, has forbidden Amy or anyone else to mention the woman to the authorities. Now the woman has disappeared.
Amy knows the only way she can prove her brother’s innocence is to find the woman and convince her to come back and testify. She only has one clue: that the woman’s sister is in Big Rock. Even though Amy’s never met her in person, it’s a small town; surely a red-haired woman won’t be too hard to find!
What she didn’t count on was a handsome sheriff getting in her way and thwarting her plans to do her own independent sleuthing. It didn’t help that he insisted on ensuring her safety, and wasn’t hesitant to apply some western justice when she didn’t follow his rules.
“Before we go to the Bronc to check on Mattie, we can go over and ask around at the Poker Palace.”
“No need to, I went today and she’s not…” Uh oh. She slowly raised her eyes again to find Jim looking at her as though he didn’t believe she’d just said that. Not after he specifically told her not to go without him. Damn. I should have done what he said.
“You did what?”
“Uh, well…” Her eyes darted about and her fingers fidgeted with the plate the cheese slices rested on. “It really was all right, I didn’t have any problems, and I couldn’t wait until-”
He was at the side of her chair before she realized he had even moved. He grasped her wrist firmly and pulled her up from her chair. He pulled the chair out a little further from the table to give himself more room, then he sat down. She didn’t even have time to ask what he was doing before he pulled her over his lap.
“What are you doing?” she shrieked. “Let me back up!”
“Not a chance,” he said as he lifted her skirt and petticoat up and over her head.
“You can’t do this to me! You have no right! This is obscene!”
“This is not obscene; it’s a well-deserved application of punishment on the backside of a disobedient woman. I told you several times not to walk around even the good parts of town, not to mention the side of town where the saloons are.”
“What were you thinking? You could have been attacked, or raped, or who knows what.” Several licks punctuated the last sentence.
“But it turned out fine! I found out they hadn’t seen her, so I checked off one of the possibilities.” She began to cry.
His hand delivered a few more blows before pausing. “But Amy, what if it hadn’t turned out okay? I deal with drunken louts and bar fights all the time. There’s no predicting what even a good man may do when he’s lost his senses to liquor. It makes some men mellow, but it makes others meaner than rattlesnakes.” He resumed. Swat!
“I’m sorry,” she sobbed. “Ow! Please stop!”
“I told you to not to go out without me. If you’d minded me, I wouldn’t have to do this. I’m not going to have you ignoring me or sneaking around hoping I don’t find out what you’re up to.” The swats came down, and her bloomers didn’t do much to protect her from the sting.
“Please stop! I was just hoping I could find Hattie!”
“What exactly were you hoping to accomplish by going without me? What was so all-fired important that you couldn’t wait?”
“Nothing! It’s just, it’s just” Don’t tell him. He wouldn’t understand about Caleb.
