CAPTURING THEIR MATE

October 2145

Lexi

“Take her. Now! She will be punished severely.” The commanding voice was husky, laced with the kind of sensuality that would leave any woman panting with desire—human or otherwise.

I wasn’t one of them.

“Yes, Captain.” The second voice was just as dark, a sneer remaining on his face as he looked me directly in the eyes.

The five creatures standing in front of a wayward group of humans were massive in size,capturingtheirmate_full their violet-hued muscular bodies and piercing tangerine eyes demanding surrender. They were spectacular in every manner, their bodies chiseled from fine marble, skin glistening in the late morning sun as if flecked with sprinkles of gold. Their leader was regal, standing at well over six and a half feet tall, his long dark hair accentuating his voluptuous lips. Even the deep baritone of his husky and sensuous voice could be considered paralyzing for several reasons.

They were from the Cenzan race, a species that had touted their friendship from the second they’d appeared, but I’d never been stupid enough to buy their crap.

They’d arrived on Earth almost two years before with little fanfare, crowding our airspace and attempting to become our friends. I’d seen their arrival, my face glued to the telescans like so many others in the surviving countries. There’d been so much trepidation then eagerness, like puppies longing for a new master. So many humans had bought their bullshit, falling for their handsome, rugged features and seductive manners.

The aliens.

Predators.

The bastards who’d killed my father.

Fuck them.

I took a decided step backward, defying the leader’s command, sneering at him in my usual defiant manner. “Stay away from me, you beasts. Fuck you!”

“You will not talk to the captain that way or you will be killed!” The Cenzan’s angry voice was more like a snarl.

Captain, huh? Who the hell cared?

“Oh, no.”

“Be quiet, Lexi.”

“Don’t anger them.”

I rolled my eyes hearing the various whispers—human whispers.

The other members of my hidden city stood huddled in fear, their breathing scattered as they attempted not to draw any attention to themselves. I’d done that for all of us. They’d hunted us like wild animals, breaking through our defense systems easily.

The great captain took a giant stride forward, his penetrating eyes concentrating on only me. I refused to blink.

I’d learned to hate the alien creatures. In my mind they were ruthless barbarians who had no care or understanding of human life. We were nothing to them but flesh and bone, men forced to work like imprisoned dogs, providing them nourishment. Sadly, the fate of fertile female humans was much worse. What little news traveled the airwaves told of horrific deeds, women abducted against their will. I’d followed the news since their arrival, making note of everything I’d heard. So much was confirmed by my father, a true hater of their kind. Then he was gone, taken from my mother and me in a flash.

The Cenzans believed they could rule our kind, stripping away what was left of our humanity. That would never happen as long as I was alive.

I was a fighter, a highly acclaimed astrophysicist, as well as a daughter of two highly trained scientists. I was also considered important to the lives of those living in Virginia City. Perhaps I’d turned into a dreamer, longing for what I’d been taught as a child, a kinder, gentler Earth.

That was no more.

The Cenzans were preparing to take over.

An earlier war had destroyed much of our lands, killing millions of people. We’d fought for our basic survival, only to be conquered by the most savage creatures in the entire solar system. My skin crawled just thinking about them. And here they were, attempting to punish me for protecting my people.

The leader gazed up and down the length of my trembling body, the look raw and visceral.

I was shaken, much more so than I wanted to let on and lifted my weapon. “Stay away from all of us or I willkill you.”

The leader took two giant strides, slapping away the weapon with ease, his hand snapping around my arm as he scanned the crowd. “This is what happens to those who do not obey us.”

As I struggled to get out of his powerful hold, he unfastened his belt, yanking the leather strap from the loops. I was stunned, unable to get away, fear crowding out any concept of breathing. “Let me go!” I finally screeched, longing for anyone in the city to stop him.

But they didn’t.

There was no way of knowing just how many monsters there were surrounding us and what they intended on doing. The boom only minutes before had been earthshattering, followed by flashes of searing white light, eradicating much of our specialized scientific equipment. Chaos had ensued, members of the city racing for cover. I’d had seconds to grab my gun, racing toward the entrance, the first to encounter the Cenzans entering our secured space.

“Get off me, you bastards!”

Issuing a series of guttural and very dark sounds, the leader wasted no time in doling out punishment, ignoring my defiance.

As the leather strap came down against my backside, I sucked in my breath, refusing to give the monster the satisfaction of hearing me cry. I was mortified, rage encompassing every inch of me. How in the hell had they broken through our cloaking device? Our heat sensors were blocked off, cooled to the point only a few instruments of any kind would be able to detect our presence.

He brought the strap down again. And again. The strikes were hard, the force jerking my body forward. The pain didn’t register at first but when it did, awakening every nerve ending, tears formed in my eyes. The moment was shocking, driving me to a heightened level of absolute shame. How could any creature do this for simply questioning what the hell they were doing?

I heard certain whimpers and moans from my people, encased with fear and even denial. This wasn’t supposed to happen. We were free, free from tyranny and war, free to live our lives the way we chose. That had been the promise.

The dream.

Maybe the nightmare.

As the whipping continued, I kicked out, managing to catch the massive beast on his shin. He didn’t react other than to smack my bottom again, savagely. The whooshing sound would forever remain in my ears, the anguish now blinding. I was in a state of disbelief, all my anger rolling to the surface. I would kill this asshole with my bare hands.

Even more shocking, there was something else even more humiliating.

I was wet, my pussy clenching with every brutal strike. Panting, my nipples scraped against my tee shirt, allowing the most intense arousal I’d ever experienced. I was lightheaded, breathless, and forbidding my pussy muscles to clench.

But they failed me.

I could feel a climax trickling up from my toes.

What the hell was wrong with me?

The spanking was brutal, telling of the kind of beasts they truly were. My bottom was on fire, every hard crack sending shards of electricity dancing across my eyes. And I remained wet, pussy juice soaking my panties. I prayed to God no one was able to gather the feral scent, but I knew otherwise. I caught a glimpse of the leader’s groin, the thick bulge straining against his pants.

As quickly as the round of discipline had begun, the horrible experience ended, leaving me aching and sore, wet and hot. I could hear his heavy breathing as he pushed me back, his eyes never blinking.

I did everything I could to give him a nasty look even as my mother approached. I threw out my hand, stopping her for advancing. “Don’t. I will handle this!” I would manage this on my own, taking the helm. We locked eyes, the alien and I and I could tell he was more than satisfied from his actions.

He remained excited.

Aroused.

The others swung their weapons in a full circle, daring any of our few citizens capable of challenging them to do so.

“What is your name?” the leader demanded as he slid his belt back into place. His eyes seemed to penetrate to my very soul, perhaps searching for answers as to who we were and exactly what we were doing.

The bastards would never find out.

“What is yours?” I retorted, giving him a lurid smile.

Two of them said something in their language, no doubt scoffing at me. I could tell the creatures were unsure of what to do with a disobedient human.

“Careful, my daughter,” my mother said in the most gentle manner, her eyes never leaving the monsters. “They do not want to hurt us any more than necessary.”

I didn’t acknowledge her, even though she claimed to be an expert of their culture. Her words seemed blasphemous given what had just occurred. There was no anger in her voice, only curiosity. I’d heard far too many stories about them, her rendition more endearing than my father’s. I’d never understood her obvious attraction to them.

Until today.

They were gorgeous, their rippling muscles and carved legs like Gods, chiseled statues meant to be worshiped. Swallowing the nasty bile that had formed in my throat, I tossed away any concept of their enticement, no doubt a ploy in order to get us to trust them.

Blinking, the leader huffed something in his native language, the alien flanking his side nodding in agreement. They were plotting what they were going to do to me.

The leaders of the United States continually issued propaganda, leading Americans to believe Cenzans were our friends. What bullshit. The people hiding in our self-contained compound had believed they were safe, protected by a cloaking device covering our entire city.

They’d been wrong, these monsters breaking through the barrier with a single blast, eradicating what little protection we had.

We would soon be annihilated and there was nothing that our soldiers or esteemed doctors and scientists could do about it. Because of what I’d done, we would be captured and imprisoned, the women of our compound taken away and every fertile female mated.

Including me.

The alien twisted his neck as he raked his eyes down the length of me, his nostrils flaring from a combination of hunger as well as rage. It was obvious he was used to obedience.

Not from this girl. No fucking way. I sneered back, my hands clenched into fists.

“Beasts,” he repeated, half under his breath as he stopped two of his soldiers from progressing. The sound was like smooth velvet sliding across my naked and fully erect nipples then brushing between my legs, teasing my swollen clit. My body betrayed me, creating tingles dancing along my arms. This wasn’t going to happen. They were our enemy in every manner. He took several steps backward, snarling under his breath.

“You’re nothing but monsters!” I snapped, keeping my tone steady.

“Lexi. Don’t!” My mother’s hand gripped my arm, trying to keep me in line.

“This is none of your concern,” another Cenzan stated. “Please return to your quarters. There is only issue with this human female at this time.”

His words brought horrified gasps from the city dwellers, even as they stepped back, ready to flee.

“What’s going to happen to them?” I demanded.

The Cenzan’s eyes never left mine as he approached, only three long strides bringing him to within inches of me. “I am Captain Khrelan Jajenar of the Federation of Cenzans. You are coming with me, Lexi Carmine, where you will face punishment for the crimes committed against our people. You have no choice. If you come without incident, I assure you that your discipline will be less severe in nature. As far as your people, we did not come here to harm them. They are free to continue their lives.”

The fucker knew my full name. Instantly, red flags raised. There was more going on than attacking their sentry soldiers. “But you destroyed our cloaking device,” I managed before anyone else in the group challenged them.

Captain Jajenar inhaled as he lowered his head, a slight growl pushing past his lips. “Your people will be under our protection and unharmed as long as you obey my every command, no matter what is demanded of you.”

He inched so close that I could almost taste his luscious lips, the color like the ripest grapes. I licked my lips, inhaling his scent and almost instantly I was intoxicated. My legs quivered, and I fought to drag myself out of the allure.

“I can’t do that,” I whispered hoarsely.

“You can and you will.”

Now, the bastard was striking a deal? I stared into his eyes, able to sense exactly what he was thinking. For a few precious seconds, I was drawn into his world, seeing everything through as if I was experiencing it. The connection was strong, vibrant, and terrifying.

My dreams over the last few months had been vivid, allowing me to see into the future. I’d always had such a gift, or what I would call a curse. At least my premonitions had allowed me to help protect my new family. But in heart, I’d known that was to be short-lived.

I’d been right.

They’d found our beautiful location, a place I called home and there was nothing we could do to stop them from destroying everything we’d worked so hard to achieve. Everything my father warned had been true.

I would be taken, forced to mate and never to return home again.

What they didn’t know is that I would die by my own hand before allowing that to happen.

CONQUERING THEIR MATE

ONLY $.99 for a limited time…

Fiona

Pain. Pleasure. Agony. Ecstasy. Spanking.

They were interwoven together, knocking against my brain. I had no idea where one had left off and the other had begun. My reactions to Shandar were confusing, driving every single sensitive spot, as well as every emotion, to the breaking point. I wanted to hate him, to fight every question and command, but I longed to submit. How could I want him? How? He’d spanked me, not once but twice and both times I’d been left wet and hot, whimpering like a naughty schoolgirl. I pushed the thoughts aside, trying to regain what was left of my sanity even as the stinging on my ass remained, a biting and wonderful reminder of his power and control.

The humiliation of walking down the long and twisted hallways entirely naked was horrific, leaving me shaking with embarrassment. I ached in ways I had never before, my mind foggy. While the punishment had been mild in comparison to Logan’s brand of sadism, I knew without any shadow of a doubt that Captain Drateq would follow through with his promises.

The visions of a barren planet, harsh conditions, and creatures who’d been beaten, left starving had been horrific. There were thousands of them, living in squalor. I couldn’t imagine what the Federation of Cenzan would do to our planet; strip it of its resources? Imprison the males, fuck the females? He was a part of the brutality, a dark and dangerous man. He was also sexy as fuck.

And the kiss.

My body had already betrayed me, desire cresting through me from the way his lips captured mine, his muscles rippling with his own ravaging appetite. His needs were savage, brutal by any standard and I longed for his touch. My nipples were hard, more so with the chill but the aching was only because of his touch. The sting on my ass and legs was biting, but the throbbing in my cunt kept me wet. Even the scent that wafted between us was undeniable. He’d already broken through some barrier, ripping at the armor he’d so aptly discovered.

However, I was not giving up so easily. This was not my home and he was not my master. Knowing what the Cenzans’ plans were for Earth yanked out the fighter in me. We were a people worth saving, at least the majority of men and women, those who’d worked long and hard to bring back methods of humanity. Maybe I was fooling myself given the surprise attack.

Various soldiers flanked the hallways. They gave utter respect to the captain as we passed, but there was no mistaking the way their eyes glazed over. I wanted to lash out, but what damn good was it going to do other than forcing another round of punishment? I already knew sitting would be somewhat painful. I continued to try to cover my breasts with one arm, my pussy with the other. The attempt was futile and after passing every soldier, I flushed even harder, perspiration now trickling down both sides of my face. I was an object, a thing to these creatures. Nothing more.

We rounded another corner and he slowed down.

“Kalek will come for you when you’ve finished with Braga. He will take you to your quarters for the evening.” Captain Drateq kept his voice low, his hand on my arm.

“Whatever.” The single smack on my ass was another reminder to learn respect. For him? For these creatures? He had to be out of his mind.

Shandar stopped long enough to push me against the corridor wall, his hand wrapped around my throat, his entire face ripe with anger. While there was no pressure, no attempt to strangle me, I realized I would need to play along if nothing else.

“Yes, Captain.”

He softened as he let go of me. “My name is Shandar. You may address me in that manner.”

“Not sir or master?” I spit out, regretting it instantly.

“That will also come in time. For now, you are allowed to use our first names. I will decide when the change occurs.” He cocked his head, what could be considered his irises changing, altering in shape and color. I was mesmerized, drawn into them as if they were the true opening to his soul.

This was another ability, controlling me, pulling me into his world. Swallowing, I blinked several times, fighting tears. This man, this… monster wasn’t going to break me in any manner. However, he was breaking through and the inner girl was trying desperately to keep her edge.

With a simple flash of his hand, the door was opened. From where I stood, I could see a sterile medical facility, similar to almost every scientific station on Earth, but the coloration, instead of stark white held a dazzling hue of cerulean blue. The ambiance was inviting, peaceful, drawing me in almost immediately but I was frightened, still angry, my nerves on edge. I had no reason to trust this man, this alien, or anyone else for that matter.

And I realized how very much alone I truly was.

“You’re not staying?” I heard the hesitation in my voice, even the little girl tone, terrified of her surroundings, longing for her daddy to remain by her side.

“You’re in very good hands.” He ushered me inside, the words said with a gentle base. “Vlanea. I have the prisoner here for examination. Her name is Fiona. Vlanea Voltar is our medical doctor, very well trained. She has spent several months on Earth, learning of your cultures and people.”

I’d never seen a female of their kind and when she stepped out from another room, I was surprised. Standing at only five feet tall, her light blonde hair was cropped short, accentuating her dazzling eyes and high cheekbones. Her coloration was lighter, the hue more of a dazzling blue. She could be considered beautiful but even her uniform seemed unisex, discounting any feminine traits. Only her full lips gave her any distinction.

“I heard she was a healer,” Vlanea said with zero emotion, her eyes roaming over me, concentrating on my breasts. She took a deep whiff, snarling after doing so.

“That she is. She’s to be examined for any injuries then taken to Braga.” Shandar kept his hand on my arm, almost in a protective stance.

I gathered almost instantly that there was a history shared between the two.

“Have you cleared this with the Imperials?” she retorted.

His nails dug into my arm, yet he still refused to let go. The tethering between us seemed to grow stronger and I could almost read his mind. He seemed surprised at her question.

“That is none of your concern, Lieutenant. If you aren’t capable of handling this operation, I will most certainly find someone who is and relieve you of your duties.” Shandar’s voice was even more commanding than I’d heard before.

She hissed, the sound like that of a threatened snake, her disdain clear in her expression. “I know my duties, Captain. I am here at your direction to do your bidding, just like everyone else.”

“Then see to it that you do. Kalek will be joining and assisting you with your exam.” Shandar pulled me closer to a steel table, slanting his eyes in my direction as he turned me to face him. “You will abide by Vlanea’s directions at all times. You will not try to escape or I assure you, the punishment you receive will be one you’ll never forget.”

Whether he was saying the words because of arrogance or Vlanea’s concerns was difficult to tell. I gave him a respectful nod, just like he required. The fact he was sending his officer in early left my mouth dry, my throat closing. To have another male present was even more debilitating. I would be defenseless.

Shandar left the room without further discussion, every step in a perfect rhythm. I was left cold, terror creeping into the back of my mind and knew in my gut I would be at odds with this woman.

Vlanea shook her head, murmuring words I couldn’t understand. She walked around me in a full circle. When she faced me again, she seemed even more agitated.

“You are a scientist.”

“Yes,” I answered, unwilling to give her more.

“And they think you can cure Braga.” She held an air of arrogance herself, undaunted by my presence.

“I’ve been told that if I don’t, I will never see the light of day again.”

Her expression shifted enough I could swear I noticed a slight smile.

“On the table, please.” She pointed without looking in my direction.

I did was I was told, noticing the straps located on each corner of the cold steel. There was nothing that could have prepared me for a jolt of terror so significant I was suffocated. I gasped for air, shaking my head. If I could run, I would do everything my power to get away.

“Relax. I’m not going to hurt you.”

I gripped the edges, counting in my mind, screaming to find my courage.

“You can lie down. This will take very little time and it will be painless.” Vlanea kept an even tone as she waited for me to respond. “And Kalek’s presence is not necessary. I am certainly not the one who will punish you.” A guttural hiss was followed by a clicking sound.

“Whatever you say.” Shivering visibly, the moment I laid down, my entire body tensed. I was unable to stop the biting words. “I don’t want to be tied down. I can do nothing to you or any of your people. I have no weapon, no method off this rust bucket. I won’t be able to hurt you. I doubt you even know what a scalpel is.” I sensed the words riled her but instead of the anticipated harsh response, she chuckled.

“Rust bucket.”

“Your ship.” I allowed my own hiss.

“Interesting term. Contrary to the actions of my male comrades, we aren’t monsters, Fiona. Certain aliens value life.” After the biting words, her smile was far too bright, completely changing her appearance. “And I do indeed know how to identify and use a scalpel as well as the majority of your planet’s medical equipment. While on Earth, I was able to partake in certain demonstrations. Medical personal on Cenzan are well trained. We’re required to be. Many Cenzan people are ill, unable to care for themselves. Medical science is my expertise, but many others on this rust bucketshare in a certain level of my training.”

“But you don’t like the captain. Do you?” I’d dared to ask the question for some crazy reason, but I gathered they’d been planning Earth’s takeover for some time. Perhaps Shandar held more secrets than I could understand.

She eased my arms by my sides and to my surprise, rolled a simple sheet over my naked body. “Shandar is a very qualified leader and he chooses his officers well. Kalek is equipped to handle almost any Airtak in the fleet. He can outrun any solar shifting rust bucket. Braga is one of our top security officers, also excellent with intergalactic politics. Our defenses are far beyond any country on your planet or the majority of planets in several solar systems. He can easily annihilate any that he considers our enemy as necessary.”

“That’s not what I asked.” Her statement was perfunctory. They were all well trained, similar to our military, refusing to give any unnecessary information.

As if ignoring my question, she held a simple implement in her hand. “You are an interesting woman, already capturing Shandar’s favor. That will bode you well.”

“But you will never approve,” I challenged.

“Not my choice or my station. I do what I am told.” Her eyes seemed to control the piece of equipment and she moved her hand all the way down my body and back up, concentrating on my abdomen. When she was finished, she studied the results. “I have known Shandar since we were children. He is considered a great leader and will possibly save our people, but he is impetuous in his decisions, putting us all in danger. Your capture and the destruction of the government facility could mean the beginning of war. Our destiny is far too important.”

News traveled fast. “There’s already a war waiting in the wings because of what they did to Braga and I assure you, no one will give a shit that I’m missing. What I consider blatantly wrong is that a facility was destroyed because of the misguided attempts of one asshole human. We were coming close to curing certain diseases, allowing a longer life of our people. Everything was destroyed because of lies. I won’t be a party to the bullshit. I can’t be. I will try and stop you.” As if my words held any credence.

“The wars of mankind are different from ours.”

“Not from what I’ve witnessed. Men and women imprisoned, fighting for scraps of food? You’re certainly powerful and you do have the upper hand. But you’re just as aggressive, and just as arrogant, determined that our race is less than acceptable.”

Her look became hardened, her eyes narrowing. “You do understand your fate and that of your kind, at least to a point. But something you should keep in mind. You are considered one of the lucky ones.”

“How so?” I looked away, my lower lip trembling. I was a stupid girl, baiting this woman who couldn’t care less whether I lived or died. “The prison will be lush?”

“Only those who refuse to bow to our leadership will end up in a prison. We strive for peace. Hundreds, thousands of years of battles have made us weary.”

“Then threatening and imprisoning isn’t the way to secure accommodations, Vlanea.”

She snorted. “It seems we only know one method of battle, brutality.”

Sexy Aliens

Hey, aliens can be very sexy, right? Do you remember when you thought about aliens, they were all little green men with huge heads and even large bug eyes? Times have changed. We’ve romanticized our concept of aliens, which makes writing romance oh-so delicious. For everyone who had a feeling that there might be a second in the Cenzan world, you were right. Releasing on February 22nd, you just might find out some answers.

Maybe…

Take the very first taste of what is now called Mastering Their Mate – but the title is going to change.

“Take her. Now! She will be punished severely.” The commanding voice was husky, laced with the kind of sensuality that would leave any woman panting with desire – human or otherwise.

What do you think? As you’ve learned, I write in several genres. You never know what’s going to come next. My latest release is all rugged cowboy. He’s a Marine, a survivor and has his eye on the very woman he fell in love with ALL those years ago. HOT off the presses.

TAMING HIS BRAT

The music seemed to stop, creating a vacuum as she turned to study the cowboy. The voice was so similar to Rex’s, a deep baritone, but there were no shivers, no wetness. He black and white cowboy twojust wasn’t the one. “I appreciate the offer, but I’m a little tired.”

“Well, if you rest up, little lady, come find me.”

Giving him a polite nod, she quickened her step, happy to see she was the second person in line. The wine in her hand, she headed for the bank of trees and picnic tables, far removed from the crowd. She leaned against a large oak tree, still tapping her foot in time to the music. The moon was almost full, creating a light show with the stars. She’d forgotten how beautiful Texas could be, especially at night. “I wish I may, I wish I might…” She allowed the words to die off.

“Wish upon a star tonight.”

Shards of electricity sheared along the backs of her legs, pulsing into her pussy, forcing her nipples to harden. She swallowed when he flanked her side, gazing up at the sky, his face pensive. The awkwardness was palpable. “What did you wish for?”

“Same thing I always do.” Rex kicked his heel into the grass.

“Mmm…”

“What about you?” he asked, darting a look over his shoulder.

“I don’t have a wish.”

“Everyone has a wish, even though we can’t be certain it’ll come true.”

She studied his long neck and strong shoulders, the short cropped blond hair, long legs that were to die for, and the most tantalizing lips she’d ever seen. “Why didn’t you call me?” Perfect conversation.

“When?”

“After the night in school.” Cooper whispered the words.

He seemed taken aback, turning to face her. “You remember that night.”

“I’ve never forgotten anything about that night. Everything was magical, special. Then you didn’t call and left town. I thought I’d done something wrong. Then I hated you, figuring you were just one of those guys.”

Rex lowered his head, brushing one hand through his hair. “Cooper, I loved the night we shared. Truth is, I wanted more.” He seemed to hesitate.

“Okay.” She had no idea what to say. “Then you should have called me. You should have said anything to me. Anything to help me understand.”

“You’re right. I was an asshole,” he whispered as he gazed up at the sky, shaking his head. “You have no idea how much I wanted to see you again, but I didn’t want to start anything because I knew it would have to end.”

“Why? I don’t understand.”

“You don’t know?”

“Know?” she repeated, inching closer. What was she supposed to have known?

He scrunched his face. “Where I’ve been.”

“No. I just got back into town myself. I didn’t talk to anyone and came back only twice for Christmas. I just wanted to get away, you know?” She took a sip of her wine, hiding behind the glass. Another song started, and she tipped her head, smiling as she looked in the direction of the band. “Do you remember this song?”

“Not easy to forget. Rascal Flatts—‘I Won’t Let Go.’” When he said the words, he inched closer.

“That was my dream and with you. I realize we were just kids, but everything was magical,” she said then exhaled, swaying her hips back and forth.

“Yeah. I’ve thought about us more than a few times.”

His voice sounded so haunted, full of pain. “Where did you go, Rex?” she dared to ask.

“The reason I didn’t call you was because I’d signed up for the Marines.”

Narrowing her eyes, she had no idea what to say. “I honestly had no idea. You enlisted?”

“Yep. I wanted to get away from my father and the ranch. I wasn’t that good in school, so I had limited choices for college. Seemed like the right decision to make. Fight for the rights of people, ensure the safety of my beloved country. Our country.”

“Then you’re a hero.” As soon as she said the words, his expression changed, becoming darker and even in the moonlight, she could see the mist in his eyes. “No matter what happened during your time, serving alone makes you a hero. Never forget that.”

He looked away, a deep breath escaping his lips.

“I wasn’t teasing. I wouldn’t tease about something like that. I just… Well, I just wanted you to know.” Cooper felt like the same young girl who’d thought she was in love with him.

Rex smiled and nodded, closing the distance and taking the wine from her hand. Every move deliberate, he eased the plastic glass onto the table and took both her hands into his. “How about a dance?”

She wasn’t certain why tears formed, threatening to reveal her sappy inner self. Perhaps because of her thoughts and wishes regarding the past or because of the sadness in his eyes, but she dug her nails into his hands, shaking. “I don’t do this very well.”

“Neither do I.” As the song continued, the sultry lilting sounds floating in their direction, he took the lead, keeping their bodies moving in time to the beat.

Relaxing, she gave him a shy smile and glanced down at her feet. There were so many words she wanted to say, thoughts about the past, but there was no reason. Six years had passed and they’d both changed. Maybe too much. “I would have given you my virginity that night.”

His eyes opening wide, he lowered his head, pressing his lips against her forehead. “And I would have been honored.” He eased one hand around her waist, pulling her close.

Cooper stiffened at first then as the tension passed, she eased her head against his carved chest, drinking in the strong scent of musk and testosterone. Just being in his arms created a wave of heat between her legs, yet she had no idea what to say or how to think. The slick wetness soaked into her already damp panties and with every shift, her erect nipples became a distinct reminder of her complicated yearning.

He pulled her even closer, his hips swaying, his footsteps leading them in a wide arc.

The feel of his groin against her stomach stole her breath, the way he throbbed, his hardness allowing her to know his feelings, his longing. Closing her eyes, she fell into the moment, clutching his shirt, her legs quivering. When he leaned in, holding her even tighter, the entire world seemed to melt away, leaving only the two of them. Her breath skipped, electricity searing every nerve ending. Everything about this was a sinful temptation or maybe a reminder of exactly what she couldn’t have.
