My Special Guest – Sandra Havro

Well, this lady might not be a household name, but many of us know her and her fabulous work. I think for many readers, you have no idea what happens behind the scenes. Once an author writes a book, submits and is accepted – then the real work begins. What do I mean by that? When there’s a publishing company, an entire team surrounds each book, various preparations done prior to the concept of release. This includes a full edit of the book and that can take time.

For authors, no matter how many times we read over a story, there are going to be mistakes. Nature of the beast. We know what we meant to say so we can glean ride over a misspelled word like nobody’s business. We also can’t see flaws in our plot line because we’re too close. While an editor’s job isn’t the change a story, he or she polishes every page. Depending on the skill level of the author as well as the length, this could take hours or days. I think many new authors are so concerned an editor is going to “change” their work. No so, but the editor will or should point out flaws. He or she thinks like a reader. An editor must have a firm grasp on correct grammar and yes, there are true styles with regard to fiction books.

I’ve seen careers of authors derailed with a single poor edit on a book. How many times have you read a book and found so many errors that you were jarred out of enjoying? You and I know the answer. I think you can see just how important an editor’s job truly is. As an author, finding one that learns and understands your style, your voice and nurtures you as you continue in your writing career, this is like finding gold. I have this with Sandra. She is by far the best editor I’ve ever worked with in seven years. I’m thankful for her honesty, impeccable business ethics and her sense of humor. This lady is also an animal lover and has the same taste in music as I do – metal. Enough of me talking. Let’s find out more about this incredible person.

SANDRA HAVRO – EDITOR FOR BLUSHING BOOKS PUBLICATIONS

I have to ask you first, how did you get into editing?

I have always been an avid reader and always read and reviewed, SH is my review name, and long before I started to read ARC’s. I didn’t even know what an ARC was, ZuesandZoeylol. But then, for years, I read ARC’s for Blushing Books and SNP when it came about. Whenever I read one, and I usually read at least one every day, if I found any mistakes, I would always email that information to them. Blushing Books approached me with the opportunity to edit for them and I happily agreed.

What do you love best and worst?

The best part is the excitement of helping an author fine tune their creation, making it the best it can be. The worst part is my time to read for pleasure has decreased, although I still squeeze it in, because I simply must read.

What is your editing schedule like?

I edit whenever I can find the time, no set schedule. So, I may be editing during the day, or late into the evening and then again, at the crack of dawn. I love having that freedom.

Do you have a favorite location to edit?

I edit at my desktop computer right off my kitchen and family room. I can concentrate and still be aware of my surroundings.

Can you tell me some of the authors you work with?

I work with some wonderful authors! Lexie Clark, Chula Stone, Olivia Starke, Ruby Caine, Shanna Handel, Cassandre Dayne, Viola Morne and you, just to name a few. I also beta read for a couple of authors, as well.

What is some advice that you would give to writers from your point of view?

In general, I would suggest to always do a final read through and run spell check before submitting. I know most authors already do this, but as authors make changes they should always check one more time.

There has to be one funny story…  Please let us know!

I was editing a book and I was stunned by the number of mistakes, and I kept wondering what in the world was happening. About halfway through the book, I approached the author and asked about it.  Come to find out, I wasn’t working off the final draft. The author had some weather related electrical problems and the final draft never saved. It’s funny now…

What are your favorite kinds of books to read?

I love mystery/suspense and I love romance with some spice!

Who are your favorite authors?

The following list does not include the authors I edit for, their books hold a special place in my heart. How could they not? This is difficult, lol, I may need a separate page for this! Ha ha! I read everything that my favorite authors write, that being said, let me apologize in advance because I’m sure I’m going to miss someone, but here goes: David Baldacci, Jonathan Kellerman, Michael Connelly, Lee Child, Carolyn Faulkner, Maggie Ryan, Maddie Taylor, Maren Smith, Alta Hensley, Jennifer Bene, Natasha Knight, Mariella Starr, Zoe Blake, Laylah Roberts…

Now, some juicy questions…

I know you have some fabulous creatures who rock your world. Tell us about them.

Do you mean my husband, children and grandchildren?  Just kidding… kinda   I have Zoey and Zuesalways loved animals, my entire life. In fact, I was going to be a veterinarian until I realized that blood and I don’t get along that well. I currently own, or I should say am owned by, two English mastiff puppies, a 13-pound mini-schnauzer mix, a 12-pound mini-pinscher mix, and a 17-year-old cat.

Why do you love the larger breed dogs?

I had an English mastiff, that I lost ten years ago. I discovered my love for the giant breed with her. There is something so special about a dog that grows to weigh more than most people.

What other kinds of furry creatures do you love?

Horses, I adore them.

What hobbies or other activities do you enjoy?

Reading, movies, family time, traveling, collecting LuLaRoe leggings – I own over 40 pair lol

How does your family feel about your editing career?

They know how much I love it and are happy for me, they think it’s pretty cool too and right up my alley. I’m the one everyone comes to when they need help with English homework or writing something.

The ocean or the mountains?

The sound of the ocean and the smell of the mountain airTattoo1

Chocolate or Twizzlers – why or why not?

Yes, to both! York Peppermint patties are my favorite and I like Twizzlers better than regular licorice.

Wine or Margaritas?

Whiskey lol

Do you edit to music? If so, what kind?

I love music, but can’t edit to it because I want to sing, badly, and I can’t concentrate on my editing. I like lots of different music, depends on what I’m doing at the time

What’s your concept of the perfect vacation?

A nice long cruise

What are two items on your bucket list?

I must see a real-life castle in Scotland that people lived in, must. To breed my English mastiffs at least once.

Leather or lace?

Lace

What is one thing people would be surprised to find out about you?

I started getting tattoos after the age of 40

Is this lady incredible or what? Don’t you love the pictures of her babies, Zues and Zoey? Thank you so much for being here. You’re fascinating as well as awesome to work with. I hope you guys enjoyed!

Kisses…

Piper
